Canadian Poultry and Egg Statistics - January to March 2011

Sales of poultry meat in 2010 totalled C$2.3 billion in 2010, down 3.9 per cent from 2009.

Canadian farmers produced 1.2 million tonnes of poultry meat in 2010. Chicken, including stewing hens, which accounts for 87 per cent of all poultry meat produced, is up 2.5 per cent from 2009. Turkey meat production stood at 159,000 tonnes in 2010, a decrease of 4.5 per cent from the previous year.

Egg output, however, increased in 2010. The value of egg sales reached $912.3 million in 2010, a decrease of 0.8 per cent from the previous year. Egg production was 636.3 million dozen, an increase of 2.5 per cent from 2009. The central region produces over half of the eggs in Canada, with Ontario producing 239.2 million dozen eggs and Quebec producing 111.6 million dozen eggs.
