GLOBAL POULTRY TRENDS 2013: Europe Exports Most Shell Eggs

07 May 2014

Global Poultry Trends 2012

More than 60 per cent of global trade in shell eggs occurs to or from countries in Europe, mainly those in the European Union, reports industry watcher, Terry Evans, while there are also active businesses in dried egg and liquid egg products.

Europe accounts for more than 1.1 million tonnes or 62 per cent of global exports of shell eggs which totalled 1.8 million tonnes in 2011 (Table 1).

Between 2000 and 2010, Europe’s shell egg exports more than doubled from 641,000 tonnes to 1.35 million tonnes, though 2012 witnessed a cut-back to 1.12 million tonnes. The European Union is responsible for 91 per cent of the Europe total.

Back in 2000, the EU accounted for 584,000 tonnes of the Europe total of 641,000 tonnes. In 2011 the EU supplied 1.02 million tonnes of the 1.12 million tonnes total for Europe. In 2011 nearly 87 per cent of EU shell egg exports go to fellow EU member countries. In 2000, 490,000 tonnes were moved from the EU to neighbouring EU countries.

By 2011, this figure had risen to 892,000 tonnes. Hence, while sales to countries outside the Community have increased, the quantities involved are small rising from just 94,000 tonnes in 2000 to 131,000 tonnes in 2011.

The Netherlands is the leading European shell egg exporter selling some 381,000 tonnes in 2011, which represented just over one-third of the total for the region as a whole and 37 per cent of all EU exports (Table 1 and Figure 1).

Figure 1. Leading European shell egg exporters ('000 tonnes)

Dutch exports in 2011 were some 63 per cent below the record 603,000 tonnes sold in 2010 when, as the result of the ban on conventional cages in Germany, the latter increased its purchases from the Netherlands to 489,000 tonnes. The quantity fell to 257,000 tonnes in 2011.

The other major recipients of Dutch eggs in 2011 were Belgium (27,500 tonnes), Angola (14,300 tonnes) and France (12,100 tonnes). As Germany significantly expanded production in 2012, so purchases from the Netherlands continued to decline contributing to a cut-back of possibly as much as eight per cent in Dutch shell egg exports. The Dutch Poultry Board considers that total egg exports (including products) fell by five per cent in that year.

Since 2008, Poland has been the second largest shell egg exporter in Europe. During the review period, this country’s shell egg exports escalated from virtually nothing to almost 174,000 tonnes. The main buyers in 2011 were Germany (58,000 tonnes), the Netherlands (33,000 tonnes) and the Czech Republic (22,000 tonnes). However, more recent data to hand indicates that Polish exports fell sharply in 2012 primarily reflecting a cutback in domestic production.

The third and fourth largest exporters of shell eggs in 2011 were Germany and Spain. Germany’s leading customers were the Netherlands (78,000 tonnes) and the United Kingdom (12,000 tonnes). Spain’s largest markets were France (38,000 tonnes), the UK (13,000 tonnes), while Italy, Germany and Portugal each took around 11, 000 tonnes.

Some 94 per cent of shell imports in Europe are made by EU member countries with virtually all being supplied by fellow EU countries (Table 2 and Figure 4). The leading buyers in 2011 were Germany with 417,000 tonnes, the Netherlands (156,000 tonnes), France (63,000 tonnes) and Belgium (57,000 tonnes).

Trade in Dried Egg

Unfortunately, the trade data on dried egg provided by the FAO does not include albumen and hence does not show the complete picture for dried egg products. Of the information supplied by the FAO (Tables 3 and 4).

Europe accounts for a little more than a half of global dried egg exports, some 93 per cent of which are sold by EU member states. Almost nine per cent of EU exports go outside the Community.

In 2011, based on FAO data, The Netherlands was the leading exporter of dried egg in Europe, followed by France and Germany (Table 3). Data supplied by the International Egg Commission shows that all forms of dried egg exports from the Netherlands contracted from 12,400 tonnes in 2010 to 10,600 tonnes in 2012.

The figures for France reveal a slight increase from 9,800 tonnes in 2010 to 10,100 tonnes in 2012.

Exports from Germany of all forms of dried egg average around 5,000 tonnes a year.

Eggs traded to other countries by Poland have expanded annually and are believed to have amounted to more than 2,000 tonnes in 2012.

Germany is the leading importer of dried egg (Table 4), the total amounting to between 9,000 and 10,000 tonnes a year. The Netherlands, Denmark and Spain are the other key importers.

Liquid Egg Trade

Europe’s exports of liquid egg account for 88 per cent of the global total of almost 314,000 tonnes in 2011. Almost all Europe’s exports are traded by EU member countries (Table 5). Of the 274,000 tonnes shipped by EU countries in 2011 less than 12,000 tonnes went to non-member countries.

The Netherlands - with almost 130,000 tonnes (47 per cent of the EU total) - was easily the top exporter, sending 57,000 tonnes to Germany, followed by the UK (21,000 tonnes), Belgium (15,000 tonnes) and France (11,000 tonnes), these four accounting for 80 per cent of the Dutch total. The indications are that Dutch liquid egg sales slipped a little in 2012.

Exports of liquid egg from Spain, which had been running at around 20,000 tonnes a year, leapt up to 40,000 tonnes in 2011 with increased sales to France (taking 14,000 tonnes), the UK (9,500 tonnes), Portugal (8,100 tonnes) and Germany (4,000 tonnes).

Germany, Belgium and France are also significant traders in this business, each exporting around 15,000 tonnes a year.

Again, almost all Europe’s liquid egg imports (Table 6) are sourced from EU countries. Germany is the number one buyer purchasing more than 61,000 tonnes in 2011, the bulk of which came from the Netherlands.

Other key importers in that year were France (28,000 tonnes), the UK (24,000 tonnes) and Belgium (21,000 tonnes). Spain shipping 12,000 tonnes and the Netherlands (10,000 tonnes) were the major suppliers to France. The Netherlands accounted for about two-thirds of both the UK’s and Belgium’s purchases.
