my neighbours have asked me for some help with one of their chickens....the fox visiteed the other night and caught one of their girls. They managed to rush out and scare the fox enough that she let go of the chicken. The next day however they noticed that her wing was hanging down and have asked me to help.
The wing seems to be hanging and swinging free!?! I had a feel along the bone but can't feel any crunching or odd shaped bits. Can they dislocate their wings? Can they snap them clean off? there was a lot of swelling but quite soft. She went into hypnotized hen mode pretty quickly so I don't really know if she can move it at all, I can't imagine she can. i have had an ex batt with a broken wing before but it took a vet with some serious rummaging to find it was broken, she was able to move it it just hung down a bit the rest of the time. The vet just strapped it to her side to stop her using it. They do not want to go to the vet....... I can understand this when the vet is likely to say £200 odd for an old hybred, pin it maybe and probably never have it mend anyway because chickens put all their calcium into their eggs. But what on earth can I do? I have strapped it to her side (but not certain this is viable without impeeding her crop) I have dosed her up on anti inflamatory pain relief. Anyone ever done anything with wings? |

No sorry but I know BaltiAngel has - her first ex-batt rescue included one with a broken wing - Flopsy from memory...who is still going strong - And she rescued and kept a jackdaw as it could never be released into the wild
Maybe if you search the forum you can see what she did, or pm her - but sounds like you made a great practical start! M |

I have a rescued ex batt, Edith, Her wing was broken and beyond repair. We had it amputated and she is fine without it. Sometimes its hard to feel the breaks if its high up. Vet would still be best to give you an answer from which you can make any decisions after that
