Thanks, everyone. Pat did tell me what Babs had done, which is a lovely way to remember them and in a positive way. I still have one of Pat's girls Angela who was blinded in a fight with Dirk so I had kept her back. At least she is thriving.

Jane, have been meaning to write to catch up with you, and see how Angela is, and more importantly, how YOU are. I'm really sorry your sale has fallen through, but hopefully another buyer will be along eventually - it's horrible to have your whole future up in the air like that.

You should not be feeling like this - as has already been said, they were given their chance, especially Dirk who never had much hope of being rehomed once, never mind twice. The fox could so easily have got them at ours, and it is only luck it didn't happen. I was so grateful when you took Dirk on, and he got all the care and attention he could ever have hoped for at yours. If he'd gone back to LHR I would never have known what became of him, or if he was having a good life. The likelihood is that he wouldn't have found another home, and would have spent his days in a cage. As it is, we know he had a wonderful life right up until the morning the fox visited, and he enjoyed every minute. As for the girls, every day was a bonus for them out of the battery, and they too had a life billions of hens have never got to experience.

Yes, it was a pretty horrible death, but so is lingering illness and pain, and that's what we know was very likely waiting down the line for the girls, and sooner rather than later.

I was and still am so grateful to you for taking them, and making our move much less stressful. I know it's hard not to feel bad, or guilty, and I have struggled with being able to fully appreciate our new life, feeling sometimes that it has all been at a high cost. But there are three hens with Babs who would not have had their chance except for what happened to Dirk and the girls, so good has come from this.

Please don't feel bad any more, Jane. You have eight lovely girls to look after, and spoil rotten. I'll be checking in with you regularly to make sure!

P x

Thanks, Pat, and to everyone else who commented. Angela is amazing, to think that at one stage I didn't think she would pull through, she was so depressed, just sitting alone, not mixing, only eating if hand fed. I thought she would fade away, then she went into moult and looked awful. Now she is looking bright, has lots of friends, eats me out of house and home, and is SO loving affection. I think we must have bonded whilst I was treating her, she was always fairly distant, but now she waits for me at night to pick her up and carry her to the shed like I used to only now she does it because she wants a cuddle.

Anywaym, I'll try to put it all behind me and move on.

Sorry for the late reply, just catching up. How awful for you, I echo the other's words, you gave them the best you could. I do hope that your plans work themselves out for you.
