I have some bantams, and the other day I found a big egg, about the size of a medium large breed of hen's egg, in their coop.
I keep the bantams with just one of my old large hens (the last of my previous flock of hens - she'd be lonely on her own), so it could be her. But she hasn't layed in at least a year, probably more, so I think this is unlikely. And then the other day I had another abnormally large egg (though not just as big as the first). Then today, one of my bantams is showing the usual signs of unhappiness - generally not being as active as usual, looking a bit dejected and standing around, etc. I was wondering if it could be her who has been laying those two big eggs, and has been having problems? I haven't seen her straining trying to get rid of an egg or anything though. Any help at all would be appreciated ![]() |

hi
the size of an egg can become irregular at the end of a cycle or at the beginning so i dont think theres much to worry about did you open the egg ?could it be a double yolker? they were probably painful to lay so i can understand her looking uncomfortable. keep an eye on her for signs such as straining and/ or fluid dripping from her vent and keep an eye on what her poo looks like too- these will point to a possible blockage. an obvious question sorry but what breed is she? is she a true bantam or a mini lf....i had polish bantams that laid remarkable sized eggs for their size. kath |
