Turkey Farm Given Go Ahead for Smokery
UK - Poultry company Turkey Talk has become the first farm in Warwickshire to be fully approved for an EEC licence and given the green light to start production of smoked meats in a purpose built smokery.

Poultry Register Draws Concerns
UK - A UK government proposal to begin a poultry register has drawn such concern over what a process of 'information sharing' will entail that the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has called for an urgent meeting with Defra.

A Brighter Future for the Christmas Turkey Market
UK - Concerns about price resistance at the top end of the Christmas turkey market are unfounded, according to Paul Kelly, managing director of Kelly Turkeys.

Egg Throughput Falling
UK - The throughput of eggs through UK packing stations has fallen by two per cent over the last year.

The Link Between Wild Birds and Livestock Salmonella
UK - Several studies have shown that a number of serovars of Salmonella enterica may be isolated from wild birds, and it has been suggested that wild birds may play a role in the epidemiology of human and livestock salmonellosis.

Dorset Epidemiology Report Published
UK - The Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs has published an epidemiology report into the H5N1 avian influenza case in wild birds in Dorset. While it has not been possible to conclusively identify the source of the infection, the most likely hypothesis is that it was introduced by an infected migratory wild bird.

Counting Hens with 'Machine Vision'
AUSTRALIA - Results from a recently completed Poultry CRC proof-of-concept project, Using "machine vision" to count hens and reduce egg breakage, has demonstrated that ‘machine vision’, or video image analysis (VIA – the ability of a computer to ‘see’), can be used to monitor egg belts for potential blockages and has the potential for effectively counting hens.

Poultry Weakens Czech Production Statistics
CZECH REPUBLIC - The Czech Statistics Office released the latest results for animal products yesterday. The report concluded that meat production totalled 626,297 tonnes last year, a 0.4% fall that appears to be due to a significant drop in poultry production.


High Food Prices Help New Push for WTO Deal
BRUSSELS - Soaring world food prices should help a revived bid to clinch a global trade deal this year because they ease the concerns of farmers in rich countries, the EU's trade chief said on Tuesday.
