Editorial: Information and Misinformation
ThePoultrySite editor, Jackie Linden, attended the annual meetings of the British Society of Animal Science and the UK Branch of the World's Poultry Science Association this week. The somewhat disappointing attendance did not detract from the high standard of many of the papers, several of which we will report in the coming weeks.
ThePoultrySite has learned of two new web-based resources introduced in the last week. The first is a multimedia tool from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, aimed at helping farmers and veterinarians discover more easily what is ailing their birds. And Thinkegg.com is a new web site set up by the International Egg Commission to provide information to consumers on the benefits of eating eggs - and more.
And on the subject of information and misinformation, there is a report from Africa this week expressing concerns of the local industry about the import of what is described as 'genetically modified' chickens. Whilst it is understandable for a local poultry official to voice concerns about lower-priced imports threatening the livelihood of local farmers, it must be made clear that genetic modification is NOT a technique used in commercial poultry farming. Such false statements - whether ill-informed or misreported - only add to consumer concerns about eating chicken for no reason at all. Jackie Linden
