Welcome to this week's newsletter
Pathogens - growing concerns and mysteries revealed
Bird flu continues to rumble on across the world, with reports this week of an outbreak of low-pathogenic avian influenza in the US state of Kentucky.
The number of human cases of bird flu so far this year has reached 22, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and seven people have died. With three new cases announced in one week, Egypt seems to be especially hard hit, and WHO has expressed concerns there about the possibility of some Egyptians carrying the bird flu virus without showing symptoms. This raises the alarming possibility that the virus has further opportunities to mutate to a strain that spreads more easily between humans.
Food pathogens have also been in the news this week. A conference last week in the US reveals widespread concern among academics and the USDA that antibiotic resistance remains a problem. But on a positive note, several recent publications provide missing pieces of the puzzle on how Salmonella and Arcobacter (a relative of Campylobacter) become virulent and develop antibiotic resistance.
