Editorial: A Week of Mixed Fortunes for Top Poultry Companies
Returning from Easter holidays, there were several stories from some of the world's top poultry companies. Russia's Cherkizovo Group had a good year in 2008 with sales up 42 per cent and gross margin a very respectable 24 per cent.
Baiada seems determined to acquire Bartter, its arch rival in Australia. Reacting to the reason given by the competition watchdog, Baiada has now repeated its intention to buy Bartter, while immediately afterwards divesting its poultry interests in the state of Victoria - a move now up for consultation. It will be interesting to watch how the offer is received in the Australian market.
Meanwhile, the bad news continues from Pilgrim's Pride, which has announced the closure of its plant in Dalton, Georgia. The company filed for Chapter 11 in December so it is showing great determination to stay in business. Tyson's alliance with Kemin might indicate it sees better opportunities in the pet food sector than in poultry in the future.
A better future for poultry meat to feed pampered pets than as a protein source for a growing human population? What a thought!
