Editorial: On 'swine flu' and a real food safety issue

There is no doubt that the Big News this week all over the world is the appearance of what has been called 'swine flu', first seen in Mexico. The story has attracted massive media attention and hence also a great deal of panic, conjecture and misinformation. With the financial world already in jittery mood, stock markets as far away as Asia fell on fear of a global pandemic and further cuts in business travel and global market disruption.

At the time of writing, only a handful of patients are known to have died following infection and most of those infected are only mildly unwell and recovering well. So far, 'swine flu' is a long way from becoming the much-feared global pandemic.

The knock-on effects are nevertheless already being felt by the poultry industry, as Russia has banned imports of beef and poultry meat (as well as pork) from a growing number of US states. As there is no evidence that this flu virus (H1N1) can infect people through the consumption of any meat products, the ban appears to be a purely political move. However, the association of food safety issues related to the consumption of poultry meat, even if groundless, does not help the image of the industry.

So let's try to stay calm and keep our perspective.

Staying with food safety issues but this time with a scientific basis, plans are progressing in the European Union on how better to control Campylobacter, a food-borne disease associated with poultry meat (and other foods). If the level of success on this initiative matches that for Salmonella, many more lives would be saved than have so far been lost to 'swine flu'.
