Editorial: The poultry world has a new top company

The big news of the week is that Brazil-based poultry processor, Perdigão, has taken over its former rival, Sadia. The new company is to be called BRF Brasil Foods SA, and will be co-chaired by Perdigão chairman, Nildemar Secches, and Sadia's Luiz Fernando Furlan. It overtakes Tyson Foods of the US as the world's biggest poultry company by market value.

In a worrying development, poultry have been culled in a Tibetan county in China's Qinghai Province following confirmation that H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza had caused the deaths of more than 120 migratory birds a week ago.

To end on a bright note, the Missan Poultry Company in Iraq is to re-open for business, four years after it was forced to close following a bird flu outbreak.
