Editorial: Is All Publicity Good Publicity?

Two items of news on poultry welfare caught the eye this week. The first was the release of the film, 'Food, Inc.' in the US. The National Chicken Council commented that it is a one-sided, negative and misleading film about the way food is produced and sold in the United States. Some of those who attended the early screenings were predictably outraged at what they saw, it has been reported.

Also on welfare, Agricultural Research Service scientists in the US report that they are contributing to the breeding of 'gentler' laying hens that still produce eggs to industry standards, but without the need for beak-trimming. Compared to the controls, which had a mortality rate of 89 per cent, the scientists may be able to claim a success with a 20 per cent loss of their special birds. With a ban on beak-trimming in prospect in many countries, there is clearly still much to do in this area.

And finally, the UK's Paul Kelly has set the Guinness World record for the fastest carving of a turkey. He prepared 14 portions from a five-kilogramme turkey in three minutes and 19 seconds at the 25th anniversary celebration of the KellyBronze turkey last week. Congratulations on both these achievements to Paul and the Kelly family!
