Editorial: Poultry Welfare Hits the Headlines in the US and Europe

Progress in improving the welfare of poultry may have been slow in coming but there has been several significant developments in the news this week involving both 'carrot' and 'stick' approaches to bring about change.

Starting with the 'stick approach', EU ministers have agreed new slaughterhouse rules. The new regulation, which comes into effect on 1 January 2013, provides for a series of practical measures to ensure animals are humanely treated. Essentially, it integrates welfare considerations into the design of slaughterhouses and requires the regular monitoring of the efficiency of stunning techniques. Furthermore, each slaughterhouse will have to appoint a specific person responsible for animal welfare and ensure that their staff is properly trained and certified.

Adopting the 'carrot' approach, fast food restaurant chain, McDonald's Europe, has launched its new Flagship Farms programme, designed to promote and share the benefits of sustainable agricultural practices via real case studies from real farms in the supply chain. The intention is to demonstrate the benefits of these practices in order to encourage broader adoption across the European farming community. Developed in conjunction with the Food Animal Initiative (FAI), it will showcase the innovative farming practices used, initially at seven progressive farms across Europe via a new web site.

Meanwhile, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is continuing its activities in the US to encourage restaurants and retailers to opt for suppliers using what PETA calls 'controlled atmosphere killing' as a 'less cruel method of slaughter'. PETA has publicly praised restaurant chain, Ruby Tuesday, for doing just this, and is now targeting grocery chain, Supervalu, over the same issue.
