Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial: US Industry Still Under Pressure
Signs of the contraction in the US poultry industry reach us almost daily. The volume of ready-to-cook poultry certified wholesome during May 2009 was nine per cent down on the same month last year, and for turkey, the volume was 14 per cent lower. This week, five per cent fewer broiler-type chicks were placed than the same time in 2008.
At the company level, Foster Farms has announced that it is to cut its growers. The company says it will not renew contracts with all of the former Pilgrim's Pride's growers in Louisiana. Foster Farms is due to take over the former Pilgrim's Pride processing plant in Farmerville on 16 July.
In other company news, Brazilian meat and poultry processor Marfrig is to acquire the turkey operations of the French-owned Doux Frangosul in Brazil. In Australia, the authorities have given a green light for the proposed acquisition of Bartter by Baiada Poultry now that competition concerns are resolved.
Last but not least, we welcome Meriden Animal Health as a Supporting Partner on ThePoultrySite.
