Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial: How Welcome is Government Support?
Moves by the European Union to put life back into the European agri-sector and stimulate production and trade offer support in times of economic downturn.
The roadmap laid down by the commission asks for an improvement of the transparency of the fixing of prices and contractual arrangements along the food supply chain and also demands the establishment of a market surveillance mechanism of counterfeiting.
The industry needs to examine its strengths and weaknesses as well as simplify is administrative procedures.
A European Forum to discuss the improvement of commercial relations among the players of the food chain, with the aim to adopt an EU wide code of conduct is expected to be set up and the competitiveness of small and medium sized enterprises is to be reviewed.
However, whether this initiative will be well received is a moot point, for in the UK plans by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for an independent body to regulate animal health, paid for by the livestock sector, are being opposed by both the UK egg and poultry industries.
How much the authorities can interfere or are wanted by the industry is questionable.
