Editorial - Better Times Around the Corner?

We might be seeing the very first signs of an upturn in the global economy if the fortunes of leading US poultry companies are anything to go by.

US meat processing giant, Tyson Foods, saw sales slip slightly over the first nine months of the current financial year and in the third quarter. The company said that in the third quarter, all operating segments were profitable with margins in the normal ranges, and Leland Tollett, interim president and chief executive officer of Tyson Foods, said: "I am encouraged by our progress in improving operational efficiencies in the Chicken segment."

Following a very difficult year, Pilgrim's Pride has announced that it has returned to profit in the last quarter.

However, with Pilgrim's announcement last month of two plant closures and this week's reports of job losses at poultry plants in the UK and Australia, it's too early to celebrate the return of 'the good old days' on global markets.

And finally, low pathogenic avian influenza has been detected following routine surveillance at a turkey farm in Minnesota, the centre of the US turkey industry.
