Welcome to this week's newsletter
Editorial - 'Swine' Flu Hits Poultry
News came through this week of the first two cases of influenza A H1N1 in poultry. Both outbreaks were in turkey breeder flocks belonging to the same company in the region of Valparaiso in Chile.
It is reported that the symptoms in the birds were mild: the main effect in both cases being a sudden drop in egg production and in some cases, poor egg shell quality. There were neither respiratory symptoms nor mortalities.
The official report to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) mentions that prior to the appearance of clinical signs, some birds were exposed to people with respiratory symptoms. This is the presumed source of infection into the flocks.
In the US, another five per cent fall has been reported in the volume of ready-to-cook poultry meat in July compared to the same month in 2008. This contraction seems to be bringing some benefits to the industry as a whole: Sanderson Farms reported its latest quarterly results, which had moved back into the black and operating income was significantly higher for the nine months of the fiscal year than the same period of last year.
As editor of ThePoultrySite, I have been attending the European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition in Edinburgh, Scotland this week. Attendance is at a record level of 560 delegates from 54 countries, including many from continents far away from Europe. The standard of the papers has been high and I look forward to reporting on them in more detail to you in the coming weeks.
