Editorial - JBS Rumoured to be Buying Pilgrim's Pride
Even industry watchers did not see this one coming! US meat markets were caught by surprise by news that JBS, the big Brazilian beef company, was looking to acquire Pilgrim's Pride, the top broiler producer in the US.
Industry experts, Len Steiner and Steve Meyer, do point out, however, that it is not an unprecedented move, given the strategic goal of JBS to become the largest diversified meat company in the world. The company has sought to bolster its position in the global meat trade by buying established US brands, benefiting from their low valuations and the relatively strong value of the Brazilian currency real against the US dollar. JBS has already risen to number three in the US beef market by acquiring Swift and the beef operations of Smithfield.
There are the first indications of Russia' intentions to cut its poultry meat import quotas for next year. The head of the country's National Meat Association, Sergei Yushin, expects the government to approve the final three-year meat quotas this month. The proposal on the table is for a cut in the poultry quota of 100,000 tonnes from the current level to 850,000 tonnes.
The welfare issue of the disposal of male chicks from the layer flock has gained further momentum this week. Vegan association, Mercy for Animals, has obtained video footage of what that group considers unacceptable practice in the killing of the surplus male chicks, and other examples of abuses of welfare practices at the poultry company concerned.
