Editorial: Campylobacter Survey Causes a Stir

A recent UK survey into pathogens in chicken has found that two thirds of the chicken meat on supermarket shelves is contaminated with campylobacter.

The news brought a cascade of media frenzy in the UK, with sensational headlines and panic stories.

However, for the industry the news was not something they were shocked by.

It has been known that there is a problem with campylobacter in chicken meat and the survey was one stage in the process of finding a way of reducing the contamination.

The industry has been successful in reducing salmonella on the farm and in the retail product and it is now looking for means to reduce incidence of this far more difficult to control pathogen.

While the media might be sensationalising the story, the industry is reassuring the consumer that chicken is safe when cooked properly.

Meanwhile, an EU ban on US poultry meat seems to be heading for the World Trade Organisation disputes panel.

And fast on its heels, the Canadian authorities are taking the US through the WTO disputes procedure over the implementation of the country of origin labelling - COOL - regulations.
