Editorial - US Pushes for Freer Trade

The US seems to have seized the idea of free trade. Its government has asked the World Trade Organization (WTO) to establish a dispute settlement panel regarding the European Union's (EU) restrictions on imports of US poultry.

The US Trade Representative Office asked the WTO to "review whether the EU's ban on the import and marketing of poultry meat and poultry meat products processed with pathogen reduction treatments (PRTs) judged safe by US and European food safety authorities is consistent with the EU's WTO obligations."

The US government complains that in 1997, the EU began prohibiting the use of PRTs to reduce microbe levels on poultry carcasses sold in the EU, stopping the shipment of virtually all US poultry. Although only the use of pure water is permitted to treat carcasses in the EU, the US argues that there is no scientific evidence that PRTs pose any health risk to consumers.

In another interesting move, the arch-rivals in poultry meat exports – the US and Brazil – have signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which is to cover the two industries working cooperatively on common issues while at the same time, remaining staunch competitors. The respective presidents of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council (USAPEEC) and the Brazilian Chicken Producers and Exporters Association (ABEF) signed the MoU. Member of these two organisations account for nearly 80 per cent of global poultry exports.

And finally, Spain has reported its first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza at a layer farm. An H7 sub-type has been identified as the cause.
