Editorial: Stepping up Hygiene and Biosecurity Standards

The new code of practice to control salmonella in animal feeds in the UK helps to tie up some loose ends in the legislation.

It brings together all the guidance notes into one document to help clarify the controls over feeds producing a safer product for both the animals and ultimately the consumer.

Meanwhile, the UK's leading turkey producer is reported to be doing its bit to reduce the potential for harbouring pathogens while transporting birds by introducing antimicrobial protection in the crates it is using.

In the Philippines, the government is moving to improve the safety of the poultry meat it is producing by accrediting the meat plants. This week 19 plants received the hygiene standards accreditation from the Philippine National Meat Inspection Service.

In India, the government has called on the small and medium sized poultry producers to have more access to better technology to help them boost production and aid their marketing ability. The appeal was delivered by Union Minister for State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas during the World Waterfowl Conference in Kerala.
