Editorial - Consumers Need Better Education

This week, it was revealed that organic turkeys now account for 2.3 per cent of the US market. A sizeable proportion of those turkeys will be bought and enjoyed during this season of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The reasons consumers gave for choosing organic birds is that the meat is safer and healthier because it is free of antibiotic and pesticide residues.

The report went on to highlight the concern that consumers did not appear to consider the food safety issues of their turkey purchases. There is no reason to believe that the risks of contracting foodborne infections from an organic turkey are any higher than one from one reared more intensively, but it seems there is still some way to go in educating the public about keeping themselves and their families safe from food-borne infections, even in organic foods.

Also this week, Newcastle disease has returned to Peru, and there has also been a first outbreak in Italian racing pigeons.
