Editorial - Russia, US Discuss Future Poultry Meat Trade

High-level talks have been taking place in Moscow this week between trade delegations from Russia and the US. As reported last week, Russia introduced a ban on the use of chlorine as a poultry carcass rinse for pathogen reduction on 1 January. In effect, this ban also covers imports of poultry meat from the US, where the procedure is routine.

Even President Obama has become involved, as two agriculture senators have written him a letter alleging that Russia's concerns over a range of food safety issues – including that of chlorine for poultry – are unfounded.

So far, no reports have emerged from the talks. However, it appears that an official from Thailand has informed the Russian authorities of his country's willingness to supply Russia with the poultry products they require to meet the gap in demand caused by the halt in US imports.

The world's biggest poultry meat exporter, Brazil, has reported that sales volumes to its top markets increased last year: the Middle East remains the top destination for Brazilian poultry meat, followed by Africa, while sales volumes to other countries declined.

In a separate announcement from Brazil's poultry meat exporters, it appears they are seeking new targets for their products including Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Sudan, Mexico, the US and Senegal. Interestingly. Russia does not feature on the list.

H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza seems to be on the rise again, with new outbreaks reported in West Bengal (India) and Bangladesh this week.
