Editorial - Strong Scientific Programme and Expo in Atlanta

The International Poultry Expo (IPE), combined with the International Feed Exposition opened yesterday, 27 January, in Atlanta in a mood of modest optimism.

Early signs are that attendance on the first day of the three-day annual event will be up on last year, according to the organisers of the event, the US Poultry & Egg Association.

Also in the news have been an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is Israel, and confirmation of the influenza A H1N1 virus in turkeys in France.

And finally, researchers in Australia may have discovered a solution to the problem of culling for surplus male chicks for layer and breeder flocks. The CSIRO, along with researchers at the University of Melbourne, have found out which gene is responsible for deciding if the chicken is male or female. The team uses RNA interference technology, which can be used to switch genes on and off.

"They found, if you switch this one gene off in a developing male embryo, which remaining male, it develops female. So instead of two testes, it has two ovaries," explained the CSIRO researchers.

This is not genetic modification but as they admit, solving one ethical dilemma may lead to new ones.
