Editorial - Survey Finds Three-Quarters of EU Chicken with Campylobacter

The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has published its survey on Campylobacter and Salmonella in chicken in the EU. This sixth baseline study found Campylobacter on an average of 76 per cent of poultry carcasses and Salmonella on 16 per cent. There was wide variation between Member States.

EFSA does stress that the aim of the survey, which was carried out in 2008, was to provide comparable figures for all participating Member States in order to give an overview of the prevalence at slaughter of Campylobacter in chickens and of Campylobacter and Salmonella in chicken carcasses, as well as to identify the best methods for surveillance and control of Campylobacter.

Also in the EU this week, the European Parliament's Environment and Consumer Protection Committee has voted in favour of requiring country of origin (COOL) to be labelled on poultry and other single-ingredient products. The decision must come as a welcome relief to producers in those countries with higher health and/or welfare standards.

Heavy hints are coming from both parties that a resolution is in sight to Russia's current ban on the import of US poultry meat. Agreement may come as early as this week.

And finally, H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza has been reported in Romania, the first EU country to report an outbreak this year.
