Editorial - US to Fight Against Unfair Trade Sanctions

The US has been involved in trade disputes - including over poultry meat exports - with a number of countries recently. The bans in Russian and the EU on US poultry meat are notable examples. It now looks as if the US is going to take on these issues.

This week, the US Trade Representative (USTR) transmitted to the Congress the 2010 National Trade Estimate (NTE), which describes significant barriers to US trade and investment faced in the last year as well as the actions being taken by the Office of the USTR to address those barriers. The USTR also delivered two new, related reports focusing specifically on sanitary and phytosanitary barriers and technical barriers to trade that harm the ability of America's agricultural producers and manufacturers to export around the world.

Could we see a sudden freeing up of world trade in poultry meat? Or is this more likely to be the start of another war of words? With the consumption of animal products in the US predicted to remain flat at best, US agriculture needs urgently to look at expanding its markets by all means.

In a continuation of another long-running debate, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on Animal Health and Welfare is launching an online public consultation on its draft scientific report on the welfare aspects of genetic selection in broilers. The consultation aims to gather the widest range of scientific-related data and comments to finalise the work and provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive scientific advice to EU decision-makers. The consultation will be open on EFSA's web site until 12 April 2010.

And finally, in the last week, Nepal has reported two more outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza, and Romania and Bhutan one each. Breeding mallard ducks on two farms in Denmark have tested positive for the low-pathogenic bird flu virus.
