Editorial - Freeing the Way for Resumption of US Poultry Meat Exports to Russia

After almost four months of on-and-off negotiations, the dispute that brought to a halt the export of US poultry meat to Russia seems to be at an end. From 1 January this year, Russia banned the use of chlorine in its own processing plants as a carcass wash, and the ban also included imported product.

Earlier this week, US poultry processors agreed to stop using chlorine to treat poultry in order to resume supplies to Russia.

Gennady Onishchenko, head of the Federal Consumer Protection Service, said: "We have information that US factories are intensively working to give up treating poultry with chlorine-containing sanitations," adding that poultry producers said they were ready to resume exports as soon as possible.

Also in the news this week was an announcement by the Brazilian Poultry Exporters Association (Abef) that it is to start promoting eggs exports.

Not content with leading the global league table in poultry meat exports, Abef chairman, Francisco Turra, said that the association has decided to submit a commercial promotion project to egg farmers, mainly because Brazil meets all of the requirements to become one of the world's main egg suppliers.
