Editorial - One Health: Many Links between Poultry and Human Health

The links between human health and animal agriculture have been much in the news this week.

A relationship between the use of antibiotics in animal production and the development of resistance in pathogenic bacteria has often been alleged, and not totally without foundation. In a survey published this week, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has reported on antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic bacteria over the period 2004 to 2007. One area highlighted by EFSA is a high level of fluoroquinolone resistance recorded in Salmonella in poultry and in Campylobacter in poultry and broiler meat in the EU.

Also released recently was the annual MARAN report. It indicates that the use of antibiotics for farm animals in Europe in 2008 – the year of the study – was similar to the previous year overall. There was a tendency for increasing amounts of these products used for broilers.

It seems that foodborne pathogens do not respect international boundaries in terms of their risk to human health. Just a few weeks ago, EFSA published a report on their findings on these pathogens in poultry meat across the EU. Now, the food safety agency in Australia has published the results of its latest survey, which found 84 per cent of live chickens entering the processing plants are infected with Campylobacter. The problem of Salmonella is much reduced, with 13 per cent of raw chicken samples contaminated, 7.5 per cent positive for pathogenic types. Similar results were reported by EFSA.

And finally, an agreement between ASEAN countries this week on a more coordinated approach to tackling avian influenza across the region is most welcome news.
