Editorial - US Broiler Industry under the Spotlight

Tomorrow, 21 May, the Department of Justice and USDA start an investigation into the business relationship between broiler growers and the large poultry processors.

In an unprecedented inquiry, the two agencies will hold a field hearing in the first step to try to discover if large chicken companies are hurting small farmers by imposing arduous contracts and tough price constraints.

The reasons given for holding the workshop are that production is down, prices are flat and sales contracts are smaller and tougher to come by.

It is perhaps no coincidence that the US National Chicken Council has this week published a report that says competition is alive and well in the broiler chicken industry and benefits chicken farmers, poultry companies and consumers.

Author of the study, Dr Thomas Elam, an agricultural economist and president of FarmEcon LLC, wrote: "On the national scale, it is the overall conclusion of this study that the chicken industry is a competitive and thriving sector. Intense competition among chicken companies leads to product innovation and lower prices for consumers. The vertically integrated structure of the industry has given it an advantage compared to its competitors and allowed it to respond quickly to changing consumer demand."

In the Bird Flu news headlines this week, Laos has reported a new outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza, and a free-range layer flock in the Netherlands has been slaughtered after the H7 low-pathogenic form of the disease was identified.
