Editorial - Views Exchanged but What Next for the US Broiler Industry?

A week ago, the US Department of Agriculture and Department of Justice jointly held a workshop in Alabama to hear a range of views on competition issues in the poultry industry.

Led by Agriculture Secretary, Tom Vilsack, and US Attorney General, Eric Holder, the workshop included panel discussions on poultry grower issues and trends in poultry production. Reports suggest that there was a lively exchange of views, including those from growers who feel at the mercy of the processors. However, as we reported last week, a study conducted on behalf of the industry organisation found that competition in the broiler chicken industry benefits farmers, poultry companies and consumers.

What will this mean for the future of the US broiler industry?

Poultry companies in the news this week are Moy Park, which has acquired Northern Ireland's O'Kane Poultry, and Cargill has announced large investments to upgrade a turkey processing plant in Waco, Texas, and a further processing plant in Russia to supply McDonald's. Both Hormel's Jennie-O Turkey Store and Sanderson Farms have reported positive results for the second quarter of the financial year.

South Korea has reported finding low-pathogenic avian influenza during routine surveillance in the south of the country.
