Editorial - Moves to Open up Poultry Meat Trade

It was announced this week that Russia may allow imports of US poultry meat again, possibly from the end of June. However, the volumes are likely to be well below those before the effective ban, which started in January. Up to 25 per cent of the US quota is reportedly being offered to other countries, which include Turkey and India.

Trade talks going on between Canada and the EU have reached a stumbling block over the former's supply management systems. Canada has refused to even discuss this matter, which provides protection for local producers of poultry and dairy products, but the European delegation is demanding a concession for the talks to reach an agreement.

In a move to bring better understanding over animal welfare issues - which cause friction to both parties over trade in poultry products – the European Union has been holding a series of workshops in Brazil this week.

And last but by no means least, we would like to welcome DSM Nutritional Products, which has joined ThePoultrySite as sponsor this week.
