Editorial - ThePoultrySite Focuses on the Asian Chicken Meat Industry

This week on ThePoultrySite, we are starting the first of a brand-new series of articles entitled Global Poultry Trends. Over three weeks, Terry Evans, an experienced and respected industry-watcher, will analyse the recent trends and future direction of chicken meat production in Asia, the region that has shown the greatest potential for growth in output over recent years, and now accounts for 35 per cent of world production. Within Asia, China is the leading producer, accounting for 44 per cent of the region's output.

Who would have thought that chickens could help to mitigate the environmentally damaging oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? It has been reported this week that researchers at the University of Delaware have developed a method to mitigate oil spills using chicken feather fibres. Professor Richard Wool has discovered that when the fibres are cut to an optimal size, surface tension forces drive them to form networks that attract and trap oil spilled on a water surface. Preliminary tests have yielded promising results and a provisional patent has been filed.

And to prove that you cannot please all of the people all of the time, the announcement this week about significant grants going to Scottish egg producers so they can invest to prepare for the coming battery cage ban in the EU was initially welcomed, also because it would bring more jobs to rural areas. But shortly afterwards came complaints from the industry that the additional production would unbalance the market.
