Editorial - Americas Under the Spotlight for Global Poultry Trends

This week sees the start of a new series of articles in the special section, Global Poultry Trends. Having already covered Asia, we now turn our attention to the Americas, which is the region that produces and exports more chicken than any other, according to industry-watcher, Terry Evans, writing specially for ThePoultrySite. Output this year is estimated to reach 39 million tonnes, which is almost half of the forecast global total of 82 million tonnes.

The success of the Americas in terms of poultry production may be due, at least in part, to the absence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus there. A tragic milestone was reached last week, when the World Health Organization's official total of human cases of H5N1 flu since 2003 reached 500. Of these cases, 296 have died. The actual numbers of cases and lives lost may, of course, be much higher.

In the US, Governor Schwarzenegger of California has signed a landmark egg bill into law, which will ban battery cages for laying hens in that state from January 2015.

And finally, Russia's agriculture minister has announced her country's intention to export 60 times more poultry meat in 2020 than this year. An ambitious target indeed.
