Editorial: New Research Strategy over Campylobacter

A new research strategy to tackle the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK has been launched this week.

The UK’s main public funders of food safety research have joined together to publish a co-ordinated strategy to investigate the food bug campylobacter, which is found in 65 per cent of shop bought chicken in the UK. This is the first time these organisations have agreed to a common set of objectives to tackle the problem.

The Food Standards Agency, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Northern Ireland Department for Agriculture and Rural Development and the Scottish Government have all agreed to support the strategy.

In Europe, derogations may be applied to delay the ban on battery cages for laying hens in some Member States.

According to Eurogroup for Animals, a statement made by Belgian minister, Sabine Laruelle, indicated that it may yet be possible for certain Member States to delay the removal of battery cages.

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has started to investigate allegations and consumer concerns over high prices for day old chicks and poultry feed.

The competition commission has issued a notice to the Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) over practices prohibited under the Competition Ordinance (2010).
