Editorial - There is No Food Crisis, Says FAO

Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has extended his country's export ban on grain until at least the end of 2011, prompting further increases in wheat prices and fresh concerns about the impact on food prices.

However, speaking on the current food situation, a senior FAO official said there is no food crisis but that greater market stability is required.

Hafez Ghanem, Assistant Director-General for Economic and Social Development at the FAO said: "The market fundamentals are sound and very different from 2007-2008. Despite the shortfall in Russia's wheat production, this year's cereal harvest was the third highest on record and stocks are high. Under these conditions we don't believe that we are headed for a new food crisis."

In the US, regulators are laying out plans to inspect the facilities where 80 per cent of the country's eggs are produced, after issuing reports on the investigation of a Salmonella enteritidis outbreak that has sickened nearly 1,500 people.

Over the next 15 months, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigators will team up with state and local partners to visit about 600 egg producers – those with 50,000 or more laying hens – to determine if their facilities comply with an egg safety rule that went into effect in July.

And last but by no means least, this week sees the start of the last in our series of Global Poultry Trends on the global chicken meat industry, as experienced industry watcher, Terry Evans, turns his attention to the contrasting regions of Africa and Oceania. In this first part, he estimates production for the whole of Africa this year to be 3.9 million tonnes, an increase of 3.3 per cent a year since 2000. South Africa dominates the African league table in terms of chicken meat production, as Australia does in Oceania, where the annual increase has been a little higher at four per cent.
