Editorial - Poultry Companies in the News

Significant mergers and acquisitions in the poultry industry have been in the news this week. Finland's HKScan has bought the Danish poultry processor, Rose Poultry and in the US, Seaboard Corporation has entered into an agreement with Smithfield Foods to buy 50 per cent of the turkey company, Butterball LLC, in partnership with the Maxwell Farms group.

Leong Hup of Malaysia has announced that it too is in expansion mode, looking to acquire or form joint ventures with small and medium-sized broiler producers.

Releasing its latest financial statements this week has been Moy Park (with businesses in the UK and France and owned by Brazil's Marfrig Group), which has turned round a loss last year to a £18 million profit this year. In Russia, Cherkizovo Group has published its financial results for the six months of 2010, stating that organic growth has been strong across all its business segments and that its profit had jumped 24 per cent compared to the same period of 2009.

At a conference last week, the chief operating officer of Tyson Foods said he expects continued strong earnings performance from the company in the coming year, explaining that increased poultry production will not led to an over-supply in the US as consumption too is growing.

And finally, the Poultry Science Association has announced that work has begun on a project that will make 88 years of Poultry Science scientific papers available online, including 17,000 articles and dozens of classic papers, boosted by a significant donation from Novus International.
