Editorial - Food Safety Hits the Headlines

Following a long-term ban on the use of meat and bone meal (MBM) in animal feeds to control transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), it has recently been proposed that poultry protein may be permitted to be fed to pigs in future, and vice versa in the EU.

An official with the National Farmers Union of England said: "There were a range of recommendations for the unwinding of regulations outlined in the second EU TSE roadmap back in July and the lifting of the ban for feeding processed animal proteins was just one of the six areas identified.

"While prices for soya meal continue to rise and the restrictions on the import of GM soya to the EU fuel an increase in the price premium for the commodity, EU farmers will want to consider cheaper sources of protein to remain competitive."

Continuing the theme of food safety but moving to the US, delegates at a recent conference on the National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) have voted to adopt a US Salmonella Enteritidis Monitored Program for multiplier meat-type breeder chickens to assess the current level of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in US broilers.

Dr Alling Yancy, US Poultry & Egg Association vice president for food safety and production programmes, explained: "The Food Safety & Inspection Service has stated that SE has been increasing at the same time the overall prevalence of Salmonella spp. has been declining in broilers. This new NPIP programme will add some context to discussions on this matter by helping us learn the relative prevalence of SE in US meat-type parent breeding flocks. Only then can we know how serious the issue is, and begin to figure out what can be done about it.

Meanwhile, there were some angry exchanges at yesterday's US House Energy and Commerce subcommittee meeting, which was set up to investigate the latest Salmonella crisis, which has resulted in 1,608 confirmed victims. The owners of the egg business at the centre of the case suggest that the source of contamination was the feed although other causes for concern over hygiene at the farm have been raised in the past.
