Editorial - Shortfall in Egg Supply Looks Likely from 2012

Industry experts from across the EU met in Brussels this week to provide poultry production estimates to the European Commission for this year and next, focussing especially on the impact of the battery cage ban for laying hens from January 2012.

There was not much cause to celebrate the run-up to World Egg Day at that meeting, by all accounts. On top of the news that soaring imports to the EU of egg products from the US and Mexico this year have caused egg prices to fall, it emerged that three of the Union's largest egg-producing nations have stated that they will not be able to meet the 1 January 2012 welfare deadline. France, Spain and Portugal together produce 39 per cent of the EU's eggs.

The battery cage ban deadline is likely to be met in the UK but low egg prices are causing most farms to run at a loss. That is not good news to hear in this week of all weeks – British Egg Week.

Also discussed at the meeting were the prospects for turkey production in the EU in the coming year. Most countries are expecting a decline in output.

And finally, low-path avian flu has been found on Taiwan during routine surveillance.

Despite all the bad news, all good wishes to readers of ThePoultrySite for World Egg Day on 8 October!

Jackie Linden
