Editorial: EU Puts Up Funds for Animal Disease Eradication and Control

The European Union has earmarked more than €250 million to support programmes to eradicate, control and monitor animal diseases in 2011 in a bid to strengthen the protection of human and animal health.

The EU27 countries endorsed the financial package proposed by the European Commission during today's meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH).

In 2011, over €23 million is allocated to control zoonotic salmonella in breeding and laying hens and in broilers (Gallus gallus) and turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) in all 27 Member States.

Member States will also continue to carry out surveillance for avian influenza in poultry and wild birds in 2011 with financial assistance from the EU towards laboratory testing and wild birds sampling costs. About €3.6 million are being made available from the EU budget.

The UK's National Farmers Union poultry board chairman, Charles Bourns has raised concerns over the implementation of the Welfare of Laying Hens Directive.

The Directive comes into force on 1 January next year and the NFU is lobbying MPs and MEPs to ensure that derogations are not agreed for European countries, which have not prepared for the new regulations.

Poland has already asked for, and been refused, a derogation for the 30 million hens, which it anticipates will remain in conventional rather than ‘enriched' cages, as the deadline passes.

In India, an apolitical forum of the farmers, Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam, is demanding a separate welfare board for the broiler chicken growers, free insurance scheme and waiver of loans that had been available to old poultry companies in the State of Tamil Nadu.
