Editorial - Launch of New Information Resource in Spanish

This week, 5M Publishing launched www.ElSitioAví, a new web site in Spanish, covering the worldwide poultry industry.

Based on the successful model of, ElSitioAví will provide information for all sectors of the poultry industry, including daily news, company and product news, as well as detailed technical articles.

Chris Wright, the editor of ElSitioAvícola, has 20 years of experience covering the Latin American poultry industry. Chris, who hails from Mexico, has visited poultry farms and processing plants in all 19 of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Latin America. To see what the new web site has to offer, click here. It is free of charge and there is no need to register.

In the global poultry industry, there have been ups and downs in Russian poultry trade. Only in the last few weeks have US poultry meat products returned to the Russian market following a ban on all chlorine-treated products from January and then the meticulous authorisation of US processing plants to export to Russia again.

This week, Prime Minister Putin announced that the country may be self-sufficient in poultry meat as soon as 2011 – a situation that was not previously expected for another couple of years. And in the meantime, Russia's poultry companies are calling for a ban on all poultry meat imports, blaming a recent five per cent drop in prices on the resumption of imports from the US. They offered assurances that they could produce sufficient to meet demand.

And finally, after an almost two-month period without reports of human illness from H5N1 'bird flu', Indonesia has announced the deaths of two patients from the infection, both of which have been linked to sick or dead poultry. These latest casualties bring the official global H5N1 toll since 2003 to 507 cases, 302 of whom have died.
