Editorial – Trade Tension Rises and Human Bird Flu Case in HK

In a further intensification of the tension over international poultry meat trade, Russia has slashed its import quota for poultry meat in 2011 by one-third compared to this year. The move has reportedly been made to boost local production.

The European Poultry Club hosted a panel discussion on the outlook for the poultry and egg markets in Russia, China and the 27 countries of the EU on the eve of EuroTier 2010, Europe's major trade show in Hanover, Germany, this week.

Moderator, Gordon Butland warned that a doubling of food production in 20 years – needed to meet the demand of a growing world population – requires careful management to prevent oversupply and a subsequent collapse of the markets. He also warned of that there would be more trade disputes in future. Finally, he stressed the importance of innovations to increase the efficiency of poultry production.

A new suspected case of H5N1 has been reported in Hong Kong, prompting the authorities to step up precautions in hospitals and officials to carry out more random tests on imported poultry. The patient, a woman, remains in intensive care after catching the virus following a trip to the mainland.

And finally, proposed new regulations from the USDA will cost the broiler chicken industry more than $1 billion over five years in reduced efficiency, higher costs for feed and housing, and increased administrative expenses, according to a study by the National Chicken Council. The rules proposed by USDA's Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) would force changes in the relationship between the nation's chicken companies and their broiler growers.
