Editorial - New Zealand Waivers over Kosher Slaughter

For a while, it looked as if kosher slaughtering of poultry would be banned in New Zealand but in a surprise move, the decision was reversed late last week, causing relief to the Jewish community but howls of protests from animal welfare groups, who says that the practice of slaughtering without prior stunning causes unnecessary suffering.

Also on the topic of welfare, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) says that feathers may be collected from geese without welfare implications.

EFSA added a number of caveats, however, to its Opinion. The collection of feathers from live geese may be carried out when the birds are moulting and if brushing and combing techniques are used, says EFSA, warning also about the need for correct handling methods of the live birds.

Experts on the Animal and Welfare (AHAW) Panel said, however, that under current commercial conditions, plucking feathers, a way of collecting feathers which causes pain, is unavoidable. They recommended that a control system should be put in place to ensure that only moulting feathers are gathered from live geese.

The death was announced last week of Bernard Matthews, founder of Bernard Matthews Farms and high-profile pioneer of the commercial turkey industry in the UK since the 1950s.

And finally, new reports indicate an outbreak of avian influenza at a poultry farm in Japan. The sub-type of the virus has yet to be confirmed but it appears to be an H5 type, some of which are highly pathogenic. Meanwhile, another outbreak of bird flu in Manitoba, Canada, has been confirmed as the low-pathogenic type.
