ThePoultrySite Newsletter - 20 January 2011

Welcome to this week's newsletter

Editorial - January 1 Deadline Confirmed for EU Battery Cage Ban

The implementation of the forthcoming ban on conventional cages for layers was confirmed yesterday at a meeting organised by the European Commission as 1 January 2012. The time frame for the implementation of the ban on the use of conventional cages was declared feasible at a meeting of major European stakeholders in Brussels. These cages will have to be phased out in the EU by 1 January 2012.

The stakeholders stressed that the circulation of eggs produced in non-compliant systems should be avoided, while they agreed that any new measures to ensure compliance will require further assessment.

The European Commission will now analyse all the options emerging from the meeting and will continue the dialogue with competent authorities and all the sectors concerned in order to ensure proper enforcement of the legislation.

South Korea is struggling to keep on top of the current disease situation as both H5N1 influenza A continues to hit poultry farms and two million pigs and cattle have been culled in the effort to control foot and mouth disease.

ThePoultryDigital Magazine - Launching January 26th 2011

And finally, next week's newsletter from ThePoultrySite will come out one day early – on Wednesday 26 January – to coincide with the launch of our brand new digital magazine, ThePoultrySite Digital Magazine, at the International Poultry Expo in Atlanta, USA.

Two 5M Publishing editors – Chris Wright and I – will be at the IPE and reporting for our respective web sites to keep you informed of the latest developments at this first leading poultry event of the year.
