Editorial - How Does a Sporting Weekend Impact the Chicken Industry?

H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) continues to hit Asia's poultry industries hard. In the last week, new reports have been received by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) describing 14 outbreaks of the disease on farms in South Korea, six in Myanmar and five in Japan. South Korea's farm ministry says that 5.41 million ducks and chickens have been culled to counter the HPAI outbreaks that started at the turn of this year.

In Egypt, where there is also political turmoil, another young child is in hospital with the disease following likely exposure to infected poultry.

There are problems of a different kind in the UK, where the egg supply-and-demand situation appears to have got out of control. According to the latest statistics, production in 2010 was 10 per cent higher than the previous year, while prices were five per cent lower. Combined with the current high feed prices, this is not a good situation for the long-term prospects for the country's egg industry, delegates at the recent NFU Wales poultry conference were told.

In the US, organic activists are pushing federal regulators to revise the rules on how the hens that lay organic eggs should be treated.

The US Department of Agriculture's current rules require organic livestock to spend time outdoors where they can engage in what the agency calls ‘natural behaviour’ but they do not specify how much space each bird should have nor what it should be like.

The activists say that the hens should be able to scratch and peck in pastures, because that is what the public expects with the term 'organic' – not concrete patios or other enclosures, which are the reality on many large organic egg farms. If the activists get their way, the implications for the country's larger organic producers and the US organic egg market generally could be drastic.

One staggering statistic from the US to finish on: over this coming Super Bowl Weekend, fans will consume one billion chicken wing portions, estimates the National Chicken Council.
