Editorial - Growth in US Poultry Meat Production Continues

Output in the US of chicken and turkey meat are expected to be 2.0 and 1.5 per cent, respectively, higher than last year, while table egg production will decline slightly, according to the latest Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry Outlook from the USDA's Economic Research Service.

Broiler production is expected to increase about two per cent in 2012, after an increase of 1.4 per cent in 2011. With expected economic conditions gradually improving, a forecast of continued high feed costs, and strong beef and pork prices, broiler integrators are expected to have an incentive to expand production.

Turkey production in 2012 is also expected to be higher, up 1.5 per cent. This is the second consecutive year of production increases after declines in 2009 and 2010.

Egg production is expected to be mixed in 2012, with table egg production declining slightly and hatching egg production higher.

In Ukraine, the President has announced that only quality poultry will be on the market by the end of this year, and that the industry should adopt EU standards of production to enable exports there in future.

Turning to technical matter and welfare, it appears that beak trimming may be beneficial for the long-term welfare of laying hens.

Despite much discussion over the prospect of a ban on beak trimming layer chicks to prevent feather pecking later, Professor Classen of the University of Saskatchewan reports research that the practice is beneficial in terms of performance. There were no significant welfare implications when it is carried out correctly, he found.

And finally, on H5N1 avian influenza, Indonesia has reported the death of a child from the infection. There has been an outbreak of low-pathogenic H7 bird flu in a flock of free-range layers in Gelderland in the Netherlands; all the birds were destroyed as a precaution against further spread. Viet Nam has reported four new outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza A sub-type.
