Editorial – Europe Has a New Centre of Excellence for Poultry Research

A €820,000-project has been set to improve the competitiveness of the Austrian and Hungarian poultry industries, focusing especially on nutrition, health and food safety.

A collaborative agreement governing a three-year cooperation was signed earlier this week between the Vetmeduni Vienna and the Georgikon Faculty of the University of Pannonia. The collaboration does not just relate to common research and consultation activities but also aims at helping poultry producers and improving food safety.

Entitled 'Centre of Excellence' for Poultry, the initiative is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and its objective is to establish a knowledge centre to foster the activities of businesses in the border region to improve their efficiency and to ensure the production of safe poultry products.

In Australia, one of the leading broiler companies is launching an ad campaign aimed at dispelling a common myth about broiler production.

Steggles has launched a new print advertisement, which will run nationally for 12 weeks and is part of an ongoing public education campaign that the comapny launched last year to inform and educate Australians about local chicken farming practices.

The new ad was created by M&C Saatchi and depicts an egg on a white background with the words 'This is the only time a Steggles chicken is kept in a confined space. We have no cages, just big barns' handwritten across the front.

Also in Australia, the Food Authority of the state of New South Wales has launched a new egg safety programme, taking a 'paddock to plate' approach.

News of the programme came the week after an article in the leading Sydney newspaper, which referred to the rising number of egg-related Salmonella outbreaks in Australia between 2001 and 2008.

NSW Food Authority CEO, Alan Coutts, said the article raises some important points regarding food safety.

He continued: "In recognition of the risks associated with certain foods, the NSW Food Authority has developed a number of industry sector requirements including one specific to the egg industry.

"The Authority operates with an integrated approach to improving understanding and safety of raw eggs and raw egg products right across the food chain, from farm to retail."

Across the Tasman Sea, the Royal NZ Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has called for a ban on all types of cage for laying hens, including enriched cages.
