Editorial – First Signs of Falling Feed Prices?

In the last week came the good news that sky-high feed ingredients prices may be coming to an end – for maize, at least.

With the release of USDA's June Grain Stocks and Acreage reports comes a fundamental shift in the corn market, suggesting that corn prices will come under considerable pressure, according to University of Illinois agricultural economist, Darrel Good.

Both the latest data on maize stocks and area planted were positive for livestock producers as they indicate a future fall in prices. Things do not look so promising for the price of soybeans, however. Stocks were a little higher than expected but the planted area was lower.

Brazil reports that its poultry meat exports for the first half of this year exceeded US$4 billion, an increase of 28.5 per cent in value and 6.8 per cent in volume to approximately two million tonnes.

Brazilian Poultry Union (Ubabef) CEO, Francisco Turra, commented that the growth would have been greater, if it were not for the depreciation of the US dollar against Brazil's real, which theoretically makes Brazilian products more expensive abroad.

Following recent reports of low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) in Europe, Russia's veterinary watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, says it may ban imports of live poultry from Germany, the Netherlands and possibly other European countries.

OIE has received reports in the last week that routine surveillance has revealed farmed birds positive for low-pathogenic viruses in the US (a turkey flock in Minnesota), Germany (six more farms in North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony) and South Africa (five more ostrich farms in the Western Cape).
