Editorial – More US Corn to Go into Motor Fuel than Animal Feed

US grain markets have risen in the last few days, following publication of the latest USDA WASDE report, which shows tighter-than-expected corn ending stocks for the upcoming marketing year.

The USDA balance table was expected to show corn carry-out for 2011/12 at 1.013 billion bushels but the USDA calculation pegged ending stocks at just 870 million bushels, which represents a stocks-to-use ratio of just 6.4 per cent.

This year, for the first time, more corn will be used in ethanol production than for animal feed, highlights the National Chicken Council (NCC) from the WASDE report.

After a long period of decision-making, the Brazilian competition authority, the Administrative Council for Economic Defence (CADE), has given the go-ahead for the merger between Brasil Foods and Sadia.

The merger that the company says will make Brasil Foods (BRF) a global leader in the food sector has been allowed subject to special conditions for trading in Brazil, laid out in a performance agreement, with conditions covering the brands and products that can be traded and in which the territories the companies operate. However, the agreement does not cover trading in export markets.

This week, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published two reports that relate to the food industry. One, published with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) is their first joint report on antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic bacteria affecting humans, animals and food.

The other report gives up-to-date information on food-borne viruses and provides advice on possible measures to control and prevent their spread in the EU. EFSA says that food-borne viruses are the second most important cause of food-borne outbreaks in the EU after Salmonella.

In the UK, a magazine advertisement that stated organically farmed animals are reared under better welfare conditions than conventionally reared animals has been ruled misleading by the Advertising Standards Authority.

And finally, on bird flu, Bangladesh and Indonesia have reported outbreaks of the H5N1 highly pathogenic form of the disease in poultry, while birds on five more farms in Germany have tested positive for the low-pathogenic form.
