Editorial – Good Prospects for Poultry in the Coming Decade

The prospects are bright for the global poultry industry, according to a new Rabobank report, despite the current turbulent environment and the challenge of meeting a 30 per cent rise in global demand in the next decade.

The report, 'Crossroads for Growth: The International Poultry sector towards 2020', describes the new competitive environment in the industry. Players from Brazil and other emerging markets have started to internationalise and diversify the global poultry industry as markets in Europe and the US become saturated.

The result is a changed competitive environment, with new players entering new markets and equity players taking up positions in the industry hoping to benefit from the opportunities.

"Poultry is going to be the winning protein in the next decade as the world population expands and incomes rise," commented Nan-Dirk Mulder, lead author of the Rabobank report. "But it will be a big challenge for the industry to keep up with the 30 per cent demand growth in the next 10 years, growth which is not distributed evenly around the globe."

Growing demand in Asia is a key driver for the expected growth in the global poultry industry since the feed crops which fuel the industry are most abundant in North and South America, future global investments will increasingly be a two-way street between American and Asian companies.

While Brazil will remain the dominant player in the export meat market, countries like Ukraine and Argentina were identified in the report as having great long-term growth potential. Thailand and China will remain dominant suppliers of labour-intensive poultry products while the US and the EU will be more 'access' supply exporters.

Sustainability is going to be a much more important topic in the new market environment, added Dr Mulder.

In the EU, the Agriculture and Fisheries Council is scheduled to discuss the implementation of the laying hen directive at its meeting over the last two days of this week.

At North Carolina State University in the US, Dr Hassan is developing a Salmonella vaccine that aims to make poultry and eggs safe for human consumption and to prevent foodborne diseases.

He explained: "It could possibly be used in a preventive pill for food poisoning. It can be something people take before travelling, especially to countries having water contamination and high incidences of food-borne illnesses. This vaccine could be used as a precaution against diseases like traveller's diarrhoea."
