Editorial: World Poultry Congress Opens in Brazil

The president of the Brazilian branch of WPSA, Dr Edir Nepomuceno da Silva, set out his goals for the future at a satellite meeting, organised by Novus, at the World Poultry Congress in Salvador this week.

Among his goals is to help develop the poultry industry in Africa, an ambitious aim on which Novus has already made a start.

The real business of the 24th World Poultry Congress started with six concurrent conferences sessions covering a variety of topics from poultry health and nutrition to welfare/environment, slaughtering and genetics.

There is also a substantial exhibition area featuring exhibits and stands from local and global suppliers to the poultry industry.

At an event organised by Novus entitled ‘The Future of the Poultry Industry: Are you Ready?’, the president of the WPSA branch hosting the Congress, Dr da Silva, expressed his hopes and priorities for the next four years, a period in which he is expected to be president of the global WPSA.

During the congress, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) signed an agreement with the Brazilian Poultry Union (UBABEF) to help finance Low Carbon Agriculture.

The decision is the result of a study conducted by Embrapa Swine and Poultry, which compared the impact of reducing greenhouse gases to the modernisation of farms.

"The study shows that poultry producers can reduce CO2 emissions by 4 million tonnes, which corresponds to a three per cent reduction for agriculture within the Low Carbon Agriculture Programme," said the director of Embrapa Swine and Poultry, Dirceu Talamini.

The first congress was held in 1912, in London, and the World’s Poultry Science Association now has almost 8,000 members of 81 national branches around the world.

After holding off strong bidding competition from Berlin and Orlando, the 26th World Poultry Congress (WPC) will be held in Paris in August 2020.

The event will be held in August 2020 at the Palais des Congrès.

Away from the congress, the FAO Food Price Index climbed six per cent in July 2012 after three months of decline.

The Index, which measures the monthly change in the international prices of a basket of food commodities, averaged 213 points, up 12 points from June. That was still well below the peak of 238 points reached in February 2011.

In the EU, the Secretariat of the European Parliament Agriculture Committee has confirmed that in total MEPs have lodged over 7000 changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reforms.

MEPs lodged 2292 amendments to Direct Payments legislative proposals, 2127 amendments to Rural Development proposals, 2094 amendments to Single Market proposals and 769 amendments to Finance and Cross Compliance proposals.

These totals do not include the 719 amendments already on the table from the Committee Rappateurs Luis Capoulas Santos, Michael Dantin and Giovanni La Via.

In Mexico, six further cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H7N3 have been reported to the OIE.

The six outbreaks occurred between the 16-27 July, in the Jalisco region of Mexico.

In total 263,486 birds were involved.
